WALKING AND CYCLING

Sewta supports the Welsh Assembly Government’s sustainable development agenda, and places particular emphasis on promoting and developing sustainable alternatives to car use. As an example of this commitment, Sewta has a programme of urban walking and cycling schemes being implemented in a number of its’ constituent local authorities across south east Wales.
As part of the programme, major projects have been or are being completed in Cardiff, Caerphilly, Pontypridd, Bridgend, Brynmawr and Newport. They are being developed with financial support from the Welsh Assembly Government’s Transport Grant funding programme and are due for completion in 2008.

MISCELLANEOUS

Sewta Car Share

In June 2005 Sewta launched their internet car sharing database, Sewtacarshare.com. Available via the internet, this is a free service that links drivers and passengers to share car journeys together, cutting travel costs, congestion and pollution.

Regional Transport Plan

In response to the Welsh Assembly Governments new approach to planning for transport in Wales, Sewta is preparing a Regional Transport Plan to deal with all aspects of travel throughout our communities. This will replace the individual Local Transport Plans developed by all 10 local authorities.

Sewta produced its Outline Regional Transport Plan in January 2007. The outline plan sets out what is needed to tackle the problems of congestion and carbon emissions and to deliver the Assembly's aspirations for its Spatial Plan and Transport Strategy.

Freight

Sewta is involved with the Wales Freight Group working in partnership with industry partners including the Welsh Assembly Government, Freight Transport Association, Road Haulage Association and the Rail Freight Group.

The Group is tasked with developing an all Wales Freight Strategy that will inform the Wales Transport Strategy and Regional Transport Plans.
