Projects - Walking and Cycling

BRIDGEND URBAN ROUTE

As part of the Sewta regional cycling initiative the Council is developing a network of urban cycle and pedestrian routes to improve the links between Bridgend town centre and the major residential areas which surround it. The routes provide direct walking and cycling access to town centre jobs, shopping and leisure services, as well as enabling access to the rest of the county borough and beyond as a result of links to the bus and railway stations.

As well as improving walking and cycling access to the town centre the network provides links to local employment, education, recreation and shopping areas, and connects with existing Safe Routes to School schemes and the National Cycle Network.

The current programme is split over 3 years into the following sections :

Residential Access Routes

BROADLANDS ROUTE

Status:                  Completed
Start Date:             March 2004
Completion Date:   July 2004

The Broadlands route provides a direct link to Bridgend town centre and retail, employment and leisure sites and provides a safe and efficient access to the town centre for all residents who wish to walk and cycle and is of particular benefit to pedestrians and new and inexperienced cyclists.

The route has two sections. An advisory 20mph speed limit in the Oaklands area along with signing which will help make the route safer for cyclists, while a segregated off-road pedestrian and cycle route runs from the Broadlands estate through to the town centre.
