MONMOUTH STRATEGIC BUS CORRIDORS AND INTERCHANGE IMPROVEMENTS

Improvements to Monmouth Bus Station, and the provision of bus stop infrastructure to regional standard on strategic bus corridors from Monmouth to Abergavenny, Caerleon, Chepstow and towards Hereford, and also local bus corridors in Monmouth, Abergavenny, Chepstow and Caldicot.
The works include the provision of a tactile raised boarding platform in the footway, bus stop pole and flag, or, at selected locations, a modern metal-framed glazed illuminated passenger shelter, complete with timetable case, together with carriageway markings.
At Monmouth Bus Station a modern enlarged passenger shelter was provided together with improved publicity, including stand identification and allocations.
- Stops are now clearly identified, for the benefit of both bus drivers and potential passengers
- Other highway users are more aware where they might encounter stationary buses, and are discouraged from parking where this would prevent passengers boarding or alighting
- Boarding platforms make it easier for passengers to board and alight. When low floor buses dock close to the platform and operate the kneeling suspension system passengers are able to take a short horizontal step to board or alight, rather than stepping up or down in the traditional manner. This is particularly beneficial to those with impaired mobility, including parents with push chairs or young children. (Low floor buses are gradually being introduced throughout the network and will be mandatory by 2013)
- Passenger shelters are more user friendly than traditional brick or block built enclosed shelters
- Improved public transport information assists infrequent users
This is the last of four similar projects resulting in improvements to all bus corridors throughout Monmouthshire.
